    Why Is Music Education Important?
On average, children spend 23 hours a week watching television. Quality programs provide a healthy alternative where children’s minds can learn and grow. Every year our schools music education is minimized or cut out all together.
Most educators agree, music should be a part of every child’s curriculum and daily routine. Performing music can allow for self-expression and be an excellent creative outlet. Playing music in a group teaches the value of teamwork and cooperation. A quality music education can provide a child with intellectual advantages that last a lifetime.

    Consider the following statistics:
    1.    A 1999 U.S. Department of Education study (NELS) found that music students:
o    Were better at math than their counterparts, regardless of students’ socioeconomic status.
o    Were less likely to drop out, be arrested, skip classes, or be suspended from school.
o    Got higher grades than their non-music student counterparts
    2.    The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse reports that “Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs).
    3.    A profile of SAT test-takers showed that students with coursework and experience in music performance and appreciation had significantly higher scores on both math and verbal tests.
In addition to the long-lasting benefits of music education, quality after-school music programs can provide a world of immediate benefits for our children and our communities. They achieve this in the following ways:
o    They provide a safe haven for children. Children are kept off the streets and away from gang activity.
o    They teach values and skills which help kids succeed academically and socially.

Welcome to La-ti-Da Music! Here are some guidelines for having the best experience possible with us:

Young children learn by observing and mimicking their primary caregivers. In music class the “teacher” is actually a guide demonstrating ways that you can have fun making music with your child. It is by observing you singing and moving with the music that your child will learn to do the same and to enjoy the experience of making music.

So, participate as much as you can. Sing with us, laugh with us! Regardless of how you feel about your musical ‘ability’, your child loves to hear you sing and will be far more likely to sing themselves if you do. It will also be more fun for you!

In a child’s early years, their brains are not yet capable of switching easily between speaking and singing. If you talk (rather than sing) to you child during class, he/she will either have to tune out the music or tune you out! So, please avoid giving spoken direction to your child. If your child becomes distracted, the best thing to do is engage them with your singing and movement and draw them back into the class activity.

Ritual is very important to children and our ritual of singing your child’s name during the “Hello Song” is especially important to making him or her feel a part of the group. If your child is not present for the beginning, he/she misses getting into the flow of the class and sometimes will not fully engage during the entire session.

It is natural for your child to roam a bit during class, so don’t be overly concerned if they do. They may want to interact with others in the group, explore the space and even be in the center of the circle. Since this is age-appropriate behavior, we expect it. Our only restrictions are safety-related.
